Editor’s Note
Poet Mark Strand was a professor in the English department at the University of Utah from 1981 to 1994, and he served as U.S. poet laureate from 1990 to 1991. Strand was also a poetry editor for Western Humanities Review, and several of his collages from that period appeared on our cover. Mark Strand died last year at the age of 80. In honor of his contributions to this journal and to the department, WHR invited several of Strand’s former colleagues and students to provide remembrances of the poet and professor. We’re also pleased to present a wide-ranging, previously unpublished interview and reprints of several poems, many of them written during Strand’s time in Utah. The editors are grateful to The Mark Strand Estate and to Alfred A. Knopf for their permission to reprint Mark Strand’s poems, and to Lori Bookstein Fine Art for providing our cover image, one of the poet’s late works.
